Invisalign® Q & A

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign uses advanced dental technology and materials to effectively straighten your smile without the highly visible and sometimes downright painful wires and brackets used in traditional braces.

Instead, Invisalign uses clear aligners that fit over your teeth and shifts them gradually into proper alignment over a period of several months. The process begins when Dr. Aharon uses specialized software to scan your teeth and create 3D images, from which she develops a strategy for straightening your smile one set of aligners at a time.

These digital images are then used as patterns to build comfortable, crystal clear aligners that perfectly fit your gum line and mouth shape. When worn in order as directed, about two weeks for each set and 20-22 hours a day, they move your teeth into the correct position for the next set, which offers a subtly different alignment than the set before.

What are the benefits of Invisalign versus traditional braces?

Invisalign aligners are nearly invisible, making them more cosmetically pleasing for adults and teens. There are also many freedoms available with aligners that simply aren’t possible with wire braces.

For instance, the aligners are easily removed so you can brush and floss your teeth normally. They also clean up easily with a soft brush daily and you can use an optional cleaning system that helps keep them crystal clear. Because you slip the aligners off for meals, you can enjoy the foods you love without worrying about debris getting trapped in your braces.

You may experience mild discomfort or pressure after switching to a new set of aligners, but this typically resolves quickly and responds well to over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen (Tylenol). For most patients, Invisalign is more comfortable than wire braces overall and won’t irritate your gums and oral mucosa.

How often will I have to see the dentist with Invisalign?

You can expect to see Dr. Aharon for checkups every six to eight weeks during the Invisalign process, so she can evaluate your progress and to pick up your next batch of aligners.

If you’re thinking about braces but looking for an alternative to all those wires and brackets, call Dr. Aharon today to schedule your Invisalign consultation or book your visit online.
